Dr. Rob Chun graduated magna cum laude with an undergraduate degree in engineering and mathematics from Vanderbilt University. He received both his doctor of optometry and residency training from the Illinois College of Optometry. Thereafter, he completed a research fellowship at the Pangere Center for Inherited Retinal Diseases. Before SUNY, he was an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he was heavily involved in curriculum development for residents and fellows as Division Education Champion. Given his unique expertise in rare forms of genetic eye disease and vision impairment classification, he has been invited to complete more than 20 international trips to evaluate visually impaired athletes for the International Paralympic Committee and the International Blind Sports Federation. He also advises the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, in addition to the United States Blind Hockey Team, on sports classification procedures for proper assessment of vision impairment. He remains active in the American Academy of Optometry as a Fellow and speaker.

Research Interests

My prior work and training have focused on gaining a deep understanding of complex genetic eye diseases including Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) and Stargardt disease. In particular, the additional time I have spent working with patients affected by these eye conditions has helped me to understand their unique visual deficits. The past few years, I have been working to develop and validate outcome measures for patients with RP. My goal is to not only develop better outcome measures for visually impaired patients with inherited retinal disease, but also to advance our understanding of how and when various aspects of functional endpoints are impacted with disease progression.

Clinical Interests

I am trained as a low vision specialist but also see patients for primary care and urgent eye care services. I am also interested in EMR/clinical informatics, the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), and proper billing and coding compliance.
